Intensive Therapy Questions

What is a Therapy Intensive?

A Therapy Intensive is an accelerated form of therapy designed to help clients go deeper and get results faster. Instead of attending therapy one hour per week for a year, why not carve out a weekend or days during the week for Therapy Intensives? It’s a cutting-edge approach to help people feel better faster. Reduces the need for a weekly therapy appointment.

The packages I have created as based on:

  • a pre-intensive intake session (this is the same for all clients),

  • Therapy Intensive Session(s) - 1-3 sessions for 3 hours each session

  • Personalised Intensive Workbook - helps you prepare for the intensive

  • Post-Intensive Interview

If you would like to discuss other intensive options, or having regular extended sessions, please feel free to talk to me about this, so we can make sure the therapy options fit in with your life and what you want to achieve.

Who can benefit from Therapy Intensives?

Therapy Intensives are perfect for people that are ready for relief now. If you’re ready to see things change in your life and your relationships but you don’t want to wait for that to happen next year - a Therapy Intensive may be right for you.

If you have a specific topic, trauma, or stressor that you want support with - this can be the focus of your Therapy Intensive. The dedicated time will be customised specifically to you and your goals.

Why should I do a Therapy Intensive instead of a normal 50-minute therapy session?

Therapy Intensives are more effective and efficient than normal 50-minute therapy sessions. Typically in a 50-minute session, there are at least 5-10 minutes of “check-in” at the start of the session and usually, 5-10 minutes spent on “closing up” or “checking out” at the end of a session - Leaving only 30-40 minutes for deep therapeutic work.

Therapy Intensives are different. A 3-hour Therapy Intensive allows for 2.5 hours of depth work. That’s the equivalent of five 50-minute sessions or more than a month of therapy - in a single day!

It might also be a model that fits in better with your lifestyles, based on your time commitments and other responsibilities.

If I already have a primary therapist, can I do an intensive as adjunct therapy?

Absolutely! Therapy Intensives work very well as an adjunct therapy. I would ask that you sign a Release of Information so that your current therapist and I can collaborate/coordinate to best serve you.

FAQ image

What if I’m interested in a Therapy Intensive but I’m not 100% sure?

Let’s schedule a time to talk! I’m happy to answer any questions and explore your unique situation to see if a Therapy Intensive may be helpful for you. You’ll find a link to book a complimentary call on my website.

OR please feel free to email and I can send you more information about Intensives, the process, and the costs.

General Questions

Where do you see people?

I mainly have therapy sessions online, so I can see people from many different parts of the world (except the US and Canada). However, I also have a room available on a Friday and Saturday in Caulfield, Melbourne, VIC, where I can see clients. This is mainly used for clients who are doing Intensive Therapy, but I'm happy to discuss this with you, and what your needs are.

If you're not sure about online therapy, there are pros and cons. Some people may find the convenience of online therapy is amazing, and feel that they are more comfortable discussing personal aspects of their life online, whilst others can feel that it is distant and miss the in-person interactions. It’s a personal preference, but feel free to discuss this with me, and make sure that you feel as comfortable as possible.

What can I expect from my first session?

The first session is an 'intake session' and is typically 90 mins long. Prior to your first session, you will be asked to complete some paperwork to tell me a bit about you, questionnaires and a consent form to complete.

The first session will build on this information that you have completed, and will typically involve talking about what brings you to therapy, your history, personal situation, and what your goals are.

By the end of the first session, we will have co-created a treatment plan, and based on your goals, there may also be an action plan that is developed about changes that you would like to put in place initially.

It is important to remember that therapy is about working together, so please feel free to ask questions, and to be open and honest about what you are thinking and feeling. It is also important that you feel that you are able to go at your own pace, and take an active part in the process.

FAQ image

How many sessions will I need and how often?

My aim for you is that you GRADUATE from therapy, and don't have to keep coming back week after week. The number of sessions will vary, depending on your goals, if you chose intensive therapy sessions, if you choose extended sessions (e.g. 90 mins), and how often you attend.

We will regularly check your treatment goals, as we want to make sure that therapy ends when you have achieved what you came here to achieve. However, if you have questions throughout the therapeutic process, please let me know, and we can talk about any concerns.

I am a Clinical Psychologist. But what does that mean?

Clinical psychologists are experts in mental health, who have undertaken specialised training in the diagnosis and psychological treatment of mental, behavioural and emotional disorders.

Clinical psychology uses a scientist-practitioner model which integrates theory and clinical practice to understand, prevent, and relieve psychological distress or dysfunction.

What's the Difference Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in the diagnosing and treatment of mental health. As they are medical doctors, they are able to prescribe medications, alongside their expertise in complex and serious mental illness.

As described above, psychologists are professionals trained in the science of how people think, feel, behave and learn.

FAQ image

Are the Sessions confidential?

Sessions are confidential; however it is important to note that in certain circumstances, your treating psychologist is required to break confidentiality. This happens when it is required by law, there is risk of harm to you or others, or if files are subpoenaed.

For more information on this, please see our privacy policy or discuss this with your psychologist.

FAQ image

Do I need a referral to see you?

No, you do not need a referral to see me, however, if a medical or other allied health professional has recommended a psychological service, it would be useful to have some information about their treatment, and therefore referrals can be important.

In addition, a referral will connect me to the other members of your health care team, and help with communication between professionals, to support a coordinated care approach. You will need a referral if you want to claim Medicare items.
